They’re a bit like the Kabaya Maccha and Strawberry Chocolates I wrote about on August 6th, but I can imagine Apllo Mini Chocolate Candy Assortments making their appearances in the goody bags at a birthday party, rather than at a dinner party. Every time I see a box of these chocolates, though, I always tell myself how adorable they look – although I’ve been doing that for so long, I’m not sure whether it’s partially out of habit. The Japanese do tend to take great care when it comes the design and appearances of their products.
The chocolates look a bit like tiny, bite-sized mushrooms with their stems cut off, and ridged caps – mushrooms of the sort you’d expect to appear somewhere in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Come to think of it, they’re a bit like umbrellas without handles, too, as well as candy corn. I can probably sit here rambling and make analogies forever, but you probably just want to hear about the taste, right?
Apllo mini chocolates come in two flavors – strawberry, and (not matcha, but…) blueberry. The strawberry is actually a lot like the Kabaya chocolates – cool and refreshing, with that not quite real strawberry, but definitely strawberry-flavored chocolate taste (if that made any sense at all). The strawberry part tastes a bit more like a strawberry milkshake. The blueberry is actually pretty unique, as far as I’m aware of. The chocolate is nice and creamy, and the taste of (real) blueberry is definitely there, especially towards the end. The chocolate blends pretty well with the blueberry, too. If you look closely, you can actually see little bits and flecks of… blueberry, I think, in the purple section.
Just for the record (and because I usually do mention it somewhere) there are about 10 boxes of chocolates per bag – five of each flavor. It would be nice to keep that in mind if you are planning to use these in goody bags, too, because I would feel terrible for the poor kid who doesn’t get a box, as a result of my forgetting to mention some basic information.
Actually, these chocolates would do just as well at a dinner party, too, especially if you remove a bunch of them from their boxes and mix them nicely in a large bowl – the color combination is quite nice.
