Meiji – Chelsea Hokkaido Milk Candy

There hasn’t been a post from me in so long, so I apologize for the delay.

Meiji Hokkaido Milk Candy

Meiji Hokkaido Milk Candy

Anyways, on to our product for the day!

Once again, the attention to detail is obvious in Japanese products. Meiji’s Chelsea Hokkaido Milk Candy is packaged exquisitely in a silver and blue box decorated with blue flowers. Each piece of candy is individually wrapped in its own silver and blue foil; there are ten pieces per box.

The inside box (or tray?) is all black with white lettering and a four-leaf clover “wishing you happiness with Chelsea”. And if you slide the tray out a bit, you’ll see a label proclaiming “The taste of old Scotland”. Pretty random, if you ask me (what does Chelsea have to do with Scotland, anyways?) , so I did some research. Milk candy is really just the Asian version of that well-beloved classic treat – butterscotch. And apparently that little slogan is a reference to the bunch of theories food historians have referring to the origin of the name “butterscotch” and its connection with Scotland. (You know – one of the definitions of “scotch” meaning of Scottish origin, or having to do with Scotland. ) Pretty interesting – the things we learn writing blogs.

Meiji’s Chelsea Hokkaido Milk Candy is made with milk from – you guessed it – Hokkaido. Hokkaido is Japan’s second-largest island, and well known for its local dairy products. The milk coming from the milk cows raised by local farmers is particularly rich and creamy, which adds a nice taste to this milk candy.

Milk candies are particularly popular nowadays in many parts of Asia, including China and Japan. These specific ones are hard candies and not actually chewy – just rather sticky at first. They have a very nice, rich, milky sort of taste, and I actually prefer these to regular butterscotch. What’s more, these are actually pretty much guilt-free; the entire box combined has only 179 calories.

Meiji Dippy Biscuit Sticks with Strawberry or Chocolate Dips

Meiji Dippy Cookies Strawberry(2008)

Meiji Dippy Cookies Strawberry(2008)

Meiji Dippy Cookies is Meiji’s 2008 New release. It looks like Meiji’s Classical Yan Yan Cookies, but it is so much better. Yan Yan Strawberry Cookies is Cookies sticks, coming with smooth Strawberry Cream for dipping. I like them in general, but the cream is kind of too sweet or artificial for me.

Comparing to Yan Yan Strawberry Cookies, New Meiji Dippy Strawberry has made several changes or improvement on Shape, texture and Ingredients (aka taste).

(1) Yan yan has white round cookies sticks. Meiji Dippy Cookies are rectangle shaped

(2) Yan yan cookies are regular cookie sticks. Meiji Dippy Strawberry has chocolate cookies

(3) Yan Yan Strawberry cream, like Glico’s Strawberry pocky, are smooth and very pink. It is very creamy sweet.

Meiji - Dippy Chocolate (2008)

Meiji - Dippy Chocolate (2008)

The strawberry cream for Meiji Dippy has much higher strawberry content, the color is very close to natural strawberry. You can actual taste the frozen dried strawberry bit. The taste is sweet, yet with real strawberry’s tangy. The strawberry dip reminds me the tastes of frozen dried strawberries in Kellog’s cereal (when you just open the box). You can actually taste the crunch. The dip is also creamy enough that make an excellent dipping.

The biscuit stick for Strawberry dippy tastes a little bit chocolaty, not too much. I think the taste of the biscuit and the strawberry dip really make a good delicious combo. The biscuit is also very thick letting you enjoy the delicious taste longer. I think the best part about Dippy Biscuit Stick with Strawberry Cream Dip is its strawberry cream.

The amount of cream is sufficient, but less than the cream in Yan Yan strawberry cookies, — or maybe the cream in regular Yan Yan strawberry is just too sweet and you can’t finish them all?

The other new Meiji Dippy is chocolate flavored. Just as Dippy Strawberry, the cream is more natural or real to Chocolate than Meiji’s original Yan Yan Chocolate Cookies. It has these small chocolate pieces inside the cream. If you like Meiji Yan yan cookies, you will like this new Meiji Dippy Chocolate even better.

Got to try them all!

What is Hi Chew? How Many Have You Tried?

What is Hi Chew Candy?

Hi-chews are a soft and chewy candies originally made in Japan in 1975 by Morinaga. All Hi chew has two layers: the outer layer is white with same flavor for all hi chew candy (a little bit vanilla yogurt like taste, but less sweet), the inner layer is flavored to various flavor.

Hi-chews have similar texture as bubble gum but they never lose their flavors. You get the same great taste in every chew until it melts in your mouth. A wonderfully delicious treat for everyone.

The Hi chew are now made both in and outside of Japan. Taiwan produces most of Non-Japan Made Hi Chew. The flavor might be the same, but the package size is much smaller. Beware the price: it might look cheaper, but you are also getting less (15% less ) too.

The Japanese version of Hi Chew is 2.01 Oz pack, with only Japanese on it.There are 12 pieces in each pack. There are only 3 flavors that are available year around:

Morinaga - Hi Chew Grape

Morinaga - Hi Chew Grape

Morinaga Hi Chew Grape Flavor available in two packages: – Single Pack and 12 Packs Value Box

Morinaga - Hi Chew Green Apple

Morinaga - Hi Chew Green Apple

Morinaga Hi Chew Green Apple (sour apple) Flavor available in two different packages: Single Pack and 12 Packs Value Box

Morinaga - Hi chew Strawberry

Morinaga - Hi chew Strawberry

Hi Chew Candy – Strawberry Flavor Available in two different package – Single Pack and 12 Packs Value Box

All these three are well accepted flavors. They are all available in 12 packs value case. They are great for many occasions: birthday, shower, Party or holiday.

There are couple other Japanese Candy makers who make soft chewy candies, which are very similar to Morinaga Hi Chew, yet with different twist. We found two that are very good. I especially like Calpis’ Yogurt based Hi Chew for its well balanced sweet and sour.
Calpis

Calpis is a Japanese lactic acid fermented Soft Drink Maker. The beverage has a light, milky, and slightly acidic flavor. It is very much like Yogurt Drink.

ImageCalpris Chewy Candy By Calpis

This candy is just like its Calpris Soft Drink with wonderful combination of fruity and intensive yogurt flavor.

UHA Mikakuto

UHA is a large Japanese Candy Maker. It makes many candies with rich flavors and really fun looking or tasting.

Endless chewiness! Soft candy with xylitol grains and gummy. From the moment you start chewing it a cool and fizzy feeling spreads in your mouth.

2008 Release: Golden Pineapple Hi Chew

Today I opened my first pack of golden Pineapple Hi Chew. It tasted almost exactly like a pineapple. The part that was different was that it was sweeter. Also, it is just as chewy as the other Hi Chew candies and is more delicious. It is still shaped like a rectangle and inside the candy, it is yellow. It was the best Single flavor Hi Chew I ever tasted. Also, if you like pineapples, I think you would enjoy this candy.

Piermall sells Golden Pineapple Hi Chew separately or in groups of 12.

2008 Release: Mixed Fruit Hi Chew Candy

Morinaga - Mixed Fruit Hi Chew 2008 New Release 12 pack

Today I just opened my first pack of mixed fruit Hi Chew. It tastes different from all of the other Hi Chew candies. This Hi chew is sweet and it really does taste like a mixture of fruits. I was able to taste pineapple, peach, a little bit of banana, and grapes. It is delicious and is my favorite Hi Chew I have tasted so far in my life. This Hi Chew candy is also very chewy, making you feel like you’re chewing bubblegum with a different taste. Tomorrow I will let you know how another New 2008 Release Hi Chew tastes.

Piermall has single packs and packs that come in 12.

Meiji – Apllo Mini Chocolate Candy Assortment

Meiji - Apollo Mix Chocolate Candy - Strawberry & Blueberry

Meiji Apollo Berry Candy

They’re a bit like the Kabaya Maccha and Strawberry Chocolates I wrote about on August 6th, but I can imagine Apllo Mini Chocolate Candy Assortments making their appearances in the goody bags at a birthday party, rather than at a dinner party. Every time I see a box of these chocolates, though, I always tell myself how adorable they look – although I’ve been doing that for so long, I’m not sure whether it’s partially out of habit. The Japanese do tend to take great care when it comes the design and appearances of their products.

Meiji - Apollo Strawberry & Blueberry Mini Candies

Meiji Apollo Mini Candy

The chocolates look a bit like tiny, bite-sized mushrooms with their stems cut off, and ridged caps – mushrooms of the sort you’d expect to appear somewhere in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Come to think of it, they’re a bit like umbrellas without handles, too, as well as candy corn. I can probably sit here rambling and make analogies forever, but you probably just want to hear about the taste, right?

Apllo mini chocolates come in two flavors – strawberry, and (not matcha, but…) blueberry. The strawberry is actually a lot like the Kabaya chocolates – cool and refreshing, with that not quite real strawberry, but definitely strawberry-flavored chocolate taste (if that made any sense at all). The strawberry part tastes a bit more like a strawberry milkshake. The blueberry is actually pretty unique, as far as I’m aware of. The chocolate is nice and creamy, and the taste of (real) blueberry is definitely there, especially towards the end. The chocolate blends pretty well with the blueberry, too. If you look closely, you can actually see little bits and flecks of… blueberry, I think, in the purple section.

Just for the record (and because I usually do mention it somewhere) there are about 10 boxes of chocolates per bag – five of each flavor. It would be nice to keep that in mind if you are planning to use these in goody bags, too, because I would feel terrible for the poor kid who doesn’t get a box, as a result of my forgetting to mention some basic information.

Actually, these chocolates would do just as well at a dinner party, too, especially if you remove a bunch of them from their boxes and mix them nicely in a large bowl – the color combination is quite nice.

Pokemon Tsurisage Bubble Gum with Stickers

Lotte – Koala’s March Cookies (Chocolate, White Chocolate, Strawberry, and Chestnut)

Lotte - Koala March Cookie - Chocolate

Lotte - Koala March Cookie - Chocolate

Koala’s March Cookies are great snacks to pack in a lunchbox for your little one’s afternoon snack, or tuck in your bag for a quick treat on-the-go. The chocolate flavored ones are a classic – they’re just like chocolate chip cookies, but even better. They’re crunchy, bite-sized, and delicious. And to top it off, those little images printed on each cookie are incredibly appealing. After all, who can resist those adorable little faces?

Lotte - Koala March Cookies - White Chocolate

Lotte - Koala March Cookies - White Chocolate

Each koala in each packet of cookies is different – from koalas eating ice cream to koalas hugging even smaller koalas, each koala is doing something different. But whether the koala’s playing peek-a-boo, eating cookies, or imitating those “lucky cats” you find sitting on the reception desks of Chinese restaurants, there is one thing you can be sure of – each cookie is equally delicious. The cookies basically consist of a crunchy outer shell, with a delicious filling that just melts in your mouth. Each box contains 10 packets of koala cookies, and each packet contains a dozen and one bite-sized cookies.

Kasugai Ramune Iro Iro Candy & Abekko – Kudamono Gashi Ramune Soda Candies

In Japanese, Iro Iro means “This or That”. Just as their name implies, Kasugai Ramune Iro Iro Lemonade candies are basically a mix of jumbo Smarties of all different sizes and flavors. The main difference is that these melt in your mouth a lot faster than Smarties do, and crumble more easily. They can be quite powdery. Personally, I prefer to let them melt, rather than biting into them.

Kasugai - Ramune Lemonade Candy Mix

The candy is a lot fruitier, and the flavors are more varied than Smarties. Flavors include pineapple, strawberry, orange, and lemon. Although the packaging does say “fruits lemonade” and “sour candy”, these are not in fact very sour at all, and only some of the candy is lemon-flavored.

Ramune Sampler Mix

The packaging is cheerful and colorful, too. The candy is wrapped in single large pieces, packs of six small pieces of varying flavors, packs of six medium-sized pieces of a single or varying flavors, and packs of ten fairly large pieces (shaped like thin, hard Lifesavers) of varying flavors.

Children tend to like these, because of their colorful wrappings and similarity to Smarties.

A sweet alternative to this would be the Abekko – Kudamono Gashi Ramune Soda Candies. They are pretty much the same, with all the same flavors, but with the added bonus flavor – grape. Unfortunately, there are no size variations – just small sized. Each set of samplers consists of 10 packets, connected to make a strand of candy. There are perforations separating each packet, so it’s easier to remove one packet at a time. It’s a great way to sample a bit of each and discover you favorite flavor!

Glico Condensed Tomato Pretz vs. Glico Classic Tomato Pretz

At first, we thought that perhaps Glico had come out with two editions of exactly the same product. There was only one way to find out the truth – we put our taste buds to the test.

After much deliberation, I, official taster of snacks and sweets, can now assure you that, however subtle, there is a difference between the two.

Glico - Pretz Condensed Tomato Sticks

Glico Condensed Tomato Pretz comes in a red box, decorated with none other than… tomatoes. There are four servings to a box, and each serving of Pretz sticks comes in a gold-colored packet. The Pretz sticks themselves smell a bit like tomato sauce – the kind with chunks of squashed tomato in them that you would pour over your pasta. This flavor tastes a bit sweeter than the Tomato Pretz Biscuit Sticks, and the taste isn’t as strong. If you can read Chinese or Japanese, you’ll see that the first character there on the box (yes, the one right below “PRETZ”) means “condensed” – so what it basically means is that the Pretz sticks are made using condensed tomatoes. You can also taste some onion flavors and some other spices and seasonings in there. There’s a bit of a smoky flavor in there as well, and the taste lingers a bit, even after you finish eating the Pretz stick.

Glico - Pretz Roasted Tomato Sticks

Tomato Pretz Biscuit Sticks come in (mostly) white boxes of four servings each as well, although the servings are a bit larger. This time, each serving comes in a green packet. You can see bits of herbs and seasonings and whatnot on the biscuit sticks. The taste is stronger and a bit saltier – slightly cheesy, too, if you think about it. It reminds me of pizza. There’s a bit more variety in flavor, although it doesn’t have the smoky taste. If you look at the ingredients, more seasoning has been added, including onions, celery, parsley and basil among others.

Pretz sticks are pretty handy as snacks. You can get creative with them and combine them with your favorite dip, although plain will do just as well.
